Heading north on Highway 1, our exploration of the Big Sur Coast began at the San Simeon Pier, located directly across from Hearst Castle. "The pier was constructed by George Hearst in 1878 to accommodate steamers bringing supplies to the property and enabling the family to travel from San Francisco by boat, avoiding the longer and more difficult overland trek."
