The group of ravens at the Tower comprises at least seven individuals (six required, with a seventh in reserve). The presence of the ravens is traditionally believed to protect the Crown and the Tower. It is believed that if the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it. Consequently, they are well taken care of and can only be approached and handled by the Yeoman Ravenmaster. Their diet: 6 oz of raw meat a day and a weekly raw egg and the occasional treat of a whole rabbit. Oh, and ravens can be long-lived. "Jim Crow" died in 1924 at 44 years old.
