| In 1938, a live coelacanth was caught off the coast of South Africa. This caused a sensation because it was thought that these fish had died out 85 million years ago. Since 1938, a living colony has been found in the deep water off the coast of the Comoro Islands, northwest of Madagascar. This specimen was caught in the 1960's. The fins reveal that coelacanths were an early branch off the evolutionary line that led to four-limbed, land-living animals. |
