Lotsa lava. We went back to Volcanoes National Park to drive the Chain of Craters Road. This 18.3 mile scenic drive takes you from an altitude of 4,000 feet and descends to sea level, where the lava crossed and blocked the road in 1974. There were lava fields as far as we could see on both sides of the road. At the end of the road, we hiked the short distance to the edge and saw the Holei Sea Arch. And on the way back, we hiked the .7 miles across the lava to see the Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs. Rain was minimal (for a change). but windy.

Interesting thing about lava. Of course, when it flows, it's hot and reddish and fluid. Then it cools, hardens, and leaves some interesting patterns. Then there's the living that survives for a time in the lava landscape before it succumbs...
