Fly to Reykjavik - Explore the Golden Circle

We had taken the bus from Reykjavik to Akureyri along the western side of Iceland. Our tour continued back along the southern coast. To get there, we caught a 40 minute flight aboard another turboprop to the Reykjavik airport where Joi was waiting with our bus.

We visited Thingvellir National Park where Icelanders, beginning in 930 AD, established the first Icelandic parliament, also known as Althingi. This area is also located in the Rift Valley where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are moving away from each other at the rate of 1/2 inch a year.

Next stop was Gullfoss, two waterfalls with a total height of 31 meters. From the falls, the water flows through the Gullfoss gorge 2.5 km in length and 70 meters in depth. The gorge and the falls were formed during and soon after the Ice Age.

Geysir, a geothermal area, was a last visit before checking into our hotel in Selfoss.
