Log Entry #13: June 20, 2005

Day 8: Arco, Idaho to Rexburg. About half way between Arco and Rexburg on Highway 33, I noticed a sign at the beginning of a road that said, "NO ADMITTANCE TO UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL". Near a high tech-looking facility, I stopped to talk to a guy walking along the side of the road in this remote area of the Idaho desert. He was wearing a card in plastic with his picture on it around his neck. I told him of the building I saw leaving Arco that had a sign on the front that said, "First City in the World To Be Lit By Atomic Power". He verified this fact and I continued my way east towards Rexburg. This area on the map is labeled "Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory".. nuclear...

As I've said, the deserts of Idaho are all abloom. By the time I reached Rexburg, the temperature was close to 90F. I've been fortunate to this point in the journey to have had cool weather and stayed dry. It's on to the Tetons and beyond tomorrow. Time to use that big gear...
