~BunceMan's TranzAmerican Bike Ride~

Log Entry #15: June 22, 2005

Day 10: Wilson to 6 miles east of Moran Junction, Wyoming. Peggy went for a ride on 'her' bike this morning in and around Teton Village, Jackson Hole, and Wilson. Today was a much-needed easy day for me.. was on Highway 22 to Jackson by 10:45am, turned north on Highway 191/26/89, then east about 6 miles of Moran Junction to a cheesy (as Peggy described it) RV park on Highway 26. Short, but extremely scenic.

I'm talking about the Grand Tetons, of course. Mountain pinnacles more than just mountains. They're 9 1/2 million years old and, because of some geological thing, are still pushing upwards. From the east of the range, the Tetons are majestic indeed. A series of sharp peaks that seemingly change shape as you cruise north (or south) down the road.

Met Peggy for lunch at the cheesy RV park (they did have awfully small showers.. had to bring my feet up to my hands to wash instead of bending down). And we hadn't learned from the experiences of the previous day.

We're sitting at the picnic table when we notice some dark clouds moving our way. Remarked on it, but didn't act on it. Suddenly, we found ourselves scrambling for the tarp to cover the bikes, Fletch is barking at the thunder, and we're looking at each other like "jeez, here we go again." It's the nature of the region, I guess. Or like a lady was heard to say in Driggs, "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes." The sun was shining again in about 10 minutes.

Peggy and I spent the rest of the afternoon cruisin' close to the Tetons. A couple of cool roads: one that took us to the top of Signal Mountain, where we could for miles in all directions; and one to Jenny Lake, that borders the base of the Teton mountains.

Tomorrow. Big miles again as I climb to Togwatee Pass (9,544 ft) and descend onto the plains of Wyoming. I hope for favorable winds...
