~BunceMan's TranzAmerican Bike Ride~

Log Entry #25: July 2, 2005

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 20: Springbrook State Park to Johnston, Iowa, a suburb of Des Moines. The plan: take a road out of Springbrook (that was not on our map) to Yale, and ride a bike path that used to be a railroad. It's called the Raccoon River Valley Trail. 40 miles down this bike path brought me to the city of Waukee, a city just east of Des Moines.

On the way I met Troy and Kim, who were riding a very cool recumbent tandem bicycle. We rode side-by-side for a while.. I told them of my TranzAmerican Bike Ride and related experiences along the way. Troy and Kim live and work in Des Moines. They let me take their picture with their tandem. Unlike most tamdems, the one they rode allows the rider in the rear to stop pedaling while the rider in the front continues to pedal.

Peggy found us a room in Johnston for the night. Our concern at this part of journey is the lack of adequate shoulders on the roads of Iowa. I went to a bike shop down the street who gave me a bike-specific map of Iowa, so we'll see what happens..

Go Lance!!
