~BunceMan's TranzAmerican Bike Ride~

Log Entry #18: June 25, 2005

Day 13: Casper to Guernsey, Wyoming. Good morning. Good night sleep on a 'bed', good continental breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express, two more log entries uploaded to bunceman.com/bike, and an 8:45am start to the next leg of the TranzAmerican Bike Ride with tailwinds..

I noticed them yesterday as I was approaching Casper about 10 miles out.. I noticed them this morning and throughout the day. Bunnies. Mostly dead and dismembered ones. It's like, "Hey, guys, let's go hang out on the road again today.. maybe we'll be flattened, contorted, or otherwise torn limb-from-limb all over the road today.. could be fun.." I had remarked to Peggy later that with all the fresh roadkill all over the road, I did not see any vultures, raptors, or other opportunistic creatures taking advantage of this bounty of 'food'. She remarked back that, maybe there's an over abundance...

And maybe I have this Wyoming weather thing down after 3 days. Clear skies in the morning; day heats up and causes big clouds, big clouds get gnarly, spew lightning and utter thunder.. which puts a spark in BunceMan's pedal cadence to get to point B as quickly as possible..

Wind was helpful, but only for the first 60 miles.. After having lunch in Riverside (Platte) Park (and using its cool public restroom) in Douglas, Wyoming, the wind was not my ally for the next 60+ miles. But such is the nature of the quest I seek to complete..

Made a cool friend in Guernsey at an RV park next to the North Platte River. Andrew, a child of the military like me (moving a lot and going to a lot of different schools), was on a vacation trip with his grandparents from Colorado. Peggy made his acquaintance first and said I should go have a chat. I caught up with Andrew fishing (successfully) on an adjacent slough of the Platte (one bass to eat, one to throw back). Showed him my bike and Andrew said he would check out the website when he could. Very polite and perceptive young man. Good luck, Andrew, as an 8th grader in the fall.
