Day 21: Johnston to Coralville, Iowa, outside of Iowa City. Sunday through the suburbs of Des Moines on their narrow, precarious roads. Good day because everybody's sleepin' in or goin' to church. Nobody's on the roads to harass me for takin' up too much of the inside lane. Nobody to get upset because I gotta swing wide a bit to avoid a potential damaging part of the gutter everyone wants me to ride in on a busy day.. like yesterday ridin' into town, jeez..
Peggy and I found another route just south, but paralleling Interstate 80 to make it to our next destination. Around the outskirts of Des Moines, south a bit on 163 into some headwinds, catch F62.. I had left early enough to miss the thunderstorm in the Des Moines area (Peggy did not), but I could see it in the distance. F62 had mostly favorable winds, some light precipitation, until I hooked up with Peggy and Fletch in Sully. We had lunch during a short downpour.
Note: I've been fortunate so far to have skirted and otherwise avoided being caught in drenching rains..
Skies cleared and I was back on the road.. to winds that had not only picked up speed, but had shifted direction. 80 miles of brutal headwinds on the rolling hills of Iowa the rest of the way..
Whew! Arrived at the RV park in Corralville about 7:10pm...
