~BunceMan's TranzAmerican Bike Ride~

Log Entry #22: June 29, 2005

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 17: North Platte to Morman Island S.R.A., outside of Grand Island, Nebraska. BRP, fast and far, Atlantic City, Bush.. I mean Busch, gas pump, Danville, Illinois...

BRP (Big Rolling Pannier). Besides transportation, the BRP provides a place to sleep, a fridge to keep things cold, a stove to cook food and make COFFEE, and a place to store essential items (clothing, bike supplies, food, etc.). Peggy is the commander of the BRP. I am riding the bike 100+ miles a day, but without Peggy alongside in the BRP coordinating expertise (maps, RV/state park listings, lunch stops), fueling (me, the BRP, and Fletch the Wonder Dog), and her support of this long-standing dream of mine, west to east across North America would not be possible.

The BRP, incidentally, is a 2002 VW/Winnebego Eurovan.

Mountain Time to Central Time. Lost another hour. No matter.. I had strong tailwinds heading east on the Lincoln Highway (30) out of North Platte. The decision: add some miles today and get a little closer to Atlantic City.

"Atlantic City, New Jersey?! Whaddaya wanna go there for?" asked three local guys sitting around a table in a small market in Maxwell, Nebraska. "All they do there is gamble." As I paid for a large bottled water and handed them one of my cards with a small version of the map route on my website, I replied, "The Lincoln Highway ends there, at the Atlantic Ocean, and that's my destination. One guy gestured increduously, the other was looking at the small map, and the other said, "Well, you're halfway there."

Day 17 mileage: 149 miles | Peggy Pics | Bush.. I mean, Busch | Gas pump | Other Lincoln Highway Highlights | Danville, Illinois | Of Historical Interest
