~BunceMan's TranzAmerican Bike Ride~

Log Entry #35: July 12, 2005

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 30: Tappan Lake Park, Ohio to Waynesburg, Pennsylvnia. 35mph to 7mph to 35 to 7.. That's the kind of road it was after leaving Tappan Lake. The TranzAmerican Bike Ride rolled through three states today: out of Ohio, into and out of the northwestern tip of West Virginia, and into Pennsylvania. 250 east follows a ridge that goes up and down sharply. No problem except for the 95 degree temp and high humidity. We had planned to go farther today, but the TranzAmerican team was sapped of energy and motivation and ended the day at a climate-controlled facility called the Comfort Inn. Anyway..

"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn." Clark Gable said these famous words in Gone With the Wind in 1939.. We said it 2005. Actually, Clark Gable was born in Cadiz, Ohio. The city has another claim to fame, however.

"Cadiz, Ohio, the proudest small town in America. By producing many men of national prominence more than any other community of similar size, Cadiz stands as a monument to the value of small town life to America. Bob Burns, deeply grateful for his small town youth in Van Buren, Arkansas, sought out towns that have fathered successful men [sorry, ladies]. He found many, but leading them was Cadiz."

This was the inscription on a plaque next to the Harrison County Courthouse. Besides Gable, other notable men born in Cadiz were John Bingham (gave the eulogy at Abe Lincoln's funeral), W.H. Holmes (archeologist), and General George A. Custer.

Day 30 mileage: 95 miles | Cool bridge | A flash of blue.. I slowed and turned around to see...
