~BunceMan's TranzAmerican Bike Ride~

Log Entry #29: July 6, 2005

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 24: Johnson-Sauk Trail State Park on State Highway 78 to Kankakee River State Park off State Highway 113. Not much to log in about today really.. I rode north back to Highway 6 and headed east. I saw more corn fields, more farm houses, barns, silos, lawns, and more corn fields. I cruised through small towns (pop. in the hundreds) and bigger towns (pop. in the thousands).

But while stopped at a stoplight in Ottawa, Illinois, I looked south and saw some tall church steeples and decided to investigate. They were tall alright, but, coincidentally, more significant were their location to an important histortical event that happened in a park across the street. Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held their first debate in the park in their bid to be elected to the United States Senate. The hot topic at the time: slavery.

Rollin' into Indiana tomorrow...

Day 24 mileage: 130 miles | Peggy Pics
