~BunceMan's TranzAmerican Bike Ride~

Log Entry #3: June 10, 2005

The route will also take us through the north, central part of Ohio. I have relatives there I have not seen in 30 years. I grew up as the son of an Air Force pilot. Because we moved around a lot, my mother made it a point to make regular visits to her family in Ohio. This was her way of giving me, and my brother and sisters, a sense of 'home'. I am hoping to visit my extended family along the way.

Aerodynamics. It helps to have a light, well-designed bike for minimum wind-resistance. Living in the Central Valley of California, I'm well-acquainted with riding against the wind. I've had aerobars on my bikes since they were invented. Resting my elbows on padded cradles fastened to my handlebars enables me to offset some of the wind resistance when pedaling into a headwind.

I am hoping for prevailing tailwinds while riding to the east coast of North America. But if I should run into some headwinds regardless, I have also made some modifications to my face...

We leave for Newport, OR, tomorrow morning...
