~BunceMan's TranzAmerican Bike Ride~

Log Entry #23: June 30, 2005

Day 18: Morman Island S.R.A., outside of Grand Island to Fremont Lakes S.R.A. Following the Lincoln Highway through Nebraska, the scenery is pretty much the same. Corn fields mostly. The bigger cities I passed through average a population of around 40,000; the smaller cities in between are in the low to mid hundreds. All the small cities have something is common though. They all have giant grain elevators and a water tower with the name of the city on both.

There are also signs along the highway that point you to a city "via county road". Once off the highway, however, you're on a dirt road. Many of the roads in the small cities off the main highway are dirt as well.. or brick.

And I know I've complained before, but I'm complaining again. Some sections of the Lincoln Highway are smooth and paved and a joy to ride.. others are an unforgiving nightmare to navigate.

Bugs. Last night at the Morman Island S.R.A., we were assailed by some very small, black, flying beetles with four yellow spots on the tops. They did not bite, but, around dusk, would end up on everything in a short period of time and need to be brushed off or picked out (food, wine, clothing) frequently. We not only encountered them again at Fremont S.R.A., but biting flies as well.. Fletch the Wonder Dog was especially susceptible to these annoying bugs..

Oo, but there are cool bugs too. Last night, Peggy saw lightning bugs for the first time; I hadn't seen them in at least 30 years. Little flashing abdomen lights at dusk all over the campground. Whoever invented the idea of fairies must have been marveling at lightning bugs...

Day 18 mileage: 120 miles | BIG tractor
