Day 25: Kankakee River State Park, Illinois to Tippecanoe River State Park, Indiana, off Highway 35. I've seen a lot of raccoon carnage all over the road.. I've seen a mother and her raccoon babies, oblivious to the danger, crossing the road and disappear into the brush.. I watched Peggy rescue a young raccoon this morning from the perils of garbage can diving..
And that was the most exciting thing that happened today. But I do have a 'do not' if you're planning on riding your two-wheeler from Illinois to Indiana..
'Do not' take State Highway 10. No shoulders, pitted white line, and a lot of big trucks in a hurry. Ask Peggy about 10. She was going the speed limit of 55 and a big truck got right on her tail, honked, and gestured at her with flailing arms in her side mirror to go faster.
The original TranzAmerican Bike route followed the Lincoln Highway (30) all the way to Atlantic City, NJ. As has been the case since entering Illinois, we have had to reassess and reroute to avoid bad roads, big trucks and harried drivers. Peggy's good at this. She consults and calculates with her map book and more detailed maps appropriated along the way. Tippecanoe River State Park is off on Highway 35, just north of State Highway 14. And 14 is the way to the next state, Ohio...
