~BunceMan's TranzAmerican Bike Ride~

Log Entry #2: June 4, 2005

Right. Hop on a bike and ride it from one side of the continent to the other. No, it's not that simple. Let's start with the bike.

1999 Cannondale R2000. I originally purchased the bike for racing. It's yellow, light, sturdy, and built for speed... and distance, depending on the physical shape of its rider. This bike is not, however, built to carry anything beyond its rider. So...

Peggy will be spotting me in our VW camper van, approximately 100 miles a day, across the continent. Food, shelter, and other essential supplies will be in the van, allowing me to cover the distance unencumbered.

Peggy. The ultimate planner. Besides the essential supplies, she has the maps and the day-by-day destinations that will assure a successful ride and adventure across the North American continent. I am fortunate, indeed, to have her support in this formidable endeavor...

Which begins when we leave Modesto, CA, for Newport, Oregon, on June 11, take two days to 'drive' to Newport, OR, where I will dip my rear wheel in the Pacific Ocean on the morning of June 13, and head east on my two-wheeler.
